Leigh Doughtery
Leigh is a local Nelson artist who works in Textured Acrylics using both brush and palette knife to achieve her loose interpretation of landscapes. She uses various textured products, and techniques to achieve the desired results. Her love of the sea, beaches and headlands are strongly featured in her work and so draws from her time in the Kapiti region and of course her home here in Nelson. As she says, “We are so lucky here in Nelson to have a never-ending supply of sea and mountain vistas to stimulate our creativity. I love looking out our window to the western ranges and seeing the ever-changing views -from sunsets to snow-capped mountains. With the depth of colour and lights coming from the ever changing sky I am never short of material to draw from.”
Leigh’s style would be classed as impressionism meets abstract in presentation with a little hint of realism for good measure. Her work is admired and held in private collections around the world.
Leigh has recently returned to Nelson after a 10 year stay on the Kapiti Coast. Whilst living in Kapiti Leigh was fortunate enough to be taught by a highly accomplished, and award winning artist, Kimbra Taylor. With private and group sessions over 5 years Leigh learned the skills of observation and technique which you see in her work today. Leigh has completed weekend workshops and tutorials with inspiring artists from around New Zealand and Australia. Leigh never stops trying new techniques and learning different skills in art, commenting, “It’s all part of the journey”. With her no fear attitude to trying innovative and exciting approaches, there will always be something new to see.
