Nelson Suter Art Society

to promote and encourage the cultivation and production of work in the visual arts

Kerry Aitken

Kerry was born in 1961 in the new suburbs of the North Shore. At 12yrs of age she shifted to a small farming community west of Whangarei, Parua Bay.

There she lived next to well renowned ex Westcoast potter and painter Yvonne Rust.

As a teenager she spent most weekends at ‘Rusties’ watching her tutor her summer school students, pot and discuss the world as it was in 1972-4.

Yvonne encouraged the teenager to follow her hearts desire and go to Art school, but upon leaving school, a nursing career was encouraged by family which she did for 15yrs.

Art and Design however continued to be an integral part of her life. She drew and painted on and off and attended many short art courses until finally going to art school graduating from AUT with a Bach. of Art and Design in Visual Arts in 2005.

Whilst living in Auckland Kerry was on the committee at Northart, where she also did Volunteer work. She was a docent at Te Tuhi for many years, and continues to be a member of the Dust Art Collective.

She has works in private collections around New Zealand including the Wallace collection.

Kerry moved to Nelson 3.5years ago. She continues to run her Design company very part-time, alongside her Counselling practice. Her Nelson life enhances her love of light, beauty, colour & design, but regular travel away is equally important.

….ART is finding space for meaning………

….DESIGN is using space meaningfully…..

….ARCHITECTURE is creating a meaningful space…..

Both as an artist and designer, with a passion for beauty, natural & built environments and light, she explores the similarities of these disciplines, while using drawing as the common thread which always has and always will give them their historical association.
