Nelson Suter Art Society

to promote and encourage the cultivation and production of work in the visual arts

Ian Bowell

Ian has lived in New Zealand for 31 years and Nelson for the last 11. Originally he studied visual art and education at Avery Hill College and Goldsmiths College in London. Since then he worked as an artist and art educator in London, Bristol, Cayman Islands and New Zealand. In New Zealand he taught visual art in secondary schools in King Country and Wellington and for 20 years worked in pre-service teacher education at Victoria University Wellington and the University of Canterbury. He now works full time as an artist.

Ian's practice is in both 2 and 3 dimensions often using a figurative motif to explore a person’s physical and emotional response to their environment. A common theme to his work is the relationship between self and place, either physical or emotional.  He uses a wide range of drawing processes to help make sense of his ideas. Informed through drawing his works are further developed using different materials and processes. Often the materials inform the works, especially in his sculptural pieces. This cycle of resolving ideas through drawing and an exploration of materials is a constant as each work informs the next.
