Nelson Suter Art Society

to promote and encourage the cultivation and production of work in the visual arts

Elaine Robinson

I grew up in the North of England , studied Textile Design at Central St Martins College of Art & Design in London and my first career was as a knitwear and surface print pattern designer. Retraining as a Secondary Art and Textile teacher, which eventually brought me over to New Zealand in 2003.

Through my paintings I am constantly intrigued by texture and colour. A throwback to my other love of Textiles. Exploring endless opportunities to create rich layers alongside hidden elements of collage. My past and present inform the images, marks and colours in my work. Drawing inspiration from the world around me, growing up in Manchester to now living in Golden Bay I have a wealth of visual stimuli that continue to evolve into abstracted works.

I work predominantly in Acrylic paint, combining multiple layers of collage and texture. Collaged fragments , pattern and paint are embedded into wood panels, before being sanded back to reveal mysterious numbers, dates and text. Uncovering what lies just below the surface never fails to inspire me.

Working out of my studio in Takaka, I spend time exploring my Artistic practice, alongside teaching workshops and private lessons. Paintings are held in private collections in New Zealand and Europe. My Art can be viewed at The Art Vault Gallery and Paper Scissors Rock Artist Collective Gallery of which I am one the contributing Artists. Both Galleries are located in Takaka.
